Manuscript on paper of a comprehensive list of Crown offices, arranged by department and accompanied by the value of each, and occasionally by the name of the current officeholder. The list includes Keepers and Wardens of various Crown possessions, fortifications, and islands; all officers of the central Royal household, such as the Exchequer, the Admiralty, and the King's Works and Revels; and a variety of personal offices.

James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. He was learned, taught by some of the best tutors available in the Scottish Humanist school, but also deeply superstitious, secretive and something of a misanthropist.
